The subdomain does not exist according to Google&#8217;s index checks. Two different answers from the same search engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Takeaway<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If these checks were taken at face value, the conclusion would be: &#8220;These pages are not indexed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That conclusion would be wrong. Both pages are actively ranking and receiving traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Google No Longer Has a Single, Publicly Observable Index<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern Google Search runs on multiple internal systems, each designed for different purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ranking and Serving Systems<\/strong> determine which pages are eligible to rank, how they are scored, and when they appear in search results. If a page ranks, it exists in these systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Retrieval and Enumeration Systems<\/strong> power <code>site:<\/code> searches, exact URL lookups, and public discovery interfaces. These systems are heavily filtered and no longer reflect full index coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A page can exist in the first system without being visible in the second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Google Limits What Its Tools Reveal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google has strong reasons to restrict what public search operators expose:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Preventing large-scale index mapping<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reducing reverse-engineering of ranking signals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suppressing low-value or derivative discovery paths<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Controlling how entities, sites, and subdomains are consolidated<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limiting automated auditing of the index<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also a simpler explanation: Google cannot effectively control spam at scale. By making its systems more opaque, Google reduces the feedback loops that spammers rely on to test and refine their tactics. When you cannot easily confirm whether a page is indexed, you cannot easily iterate on what works. Opacity becomes a spam mitigation strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is a deliberate separation between &#8220;pages Google uses&#8221; and &#8220;pages Google will show you directly.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Subdomains, Entity Consolidation, and Canonicalization<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This behavior is especially common when Google applies entity consolidation or canonicalization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, Google may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Treat subdomains as part of a single site entity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consolidate signals to a different canonical hostname<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attribute content to a primary source domain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When this happens, the page can still rank and its signals still count, but the original URL may appear absent from index-checking views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This explains why some pages appear &#8220;not indexed&#8221; even though Google is actively using them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What &#8220;Not Indexed&#8221; Results Actually Mean Now<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A negative result from an index check can indicate several different things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The page is genuinely not indexed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The page is indexed but hidden from retrieval interfaces<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The page has been canonicalized to another source<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The page is filtered from operator-based views<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only the first case represents an actual indexing problem.
